After watching and reading The Secret, I have been tuning in to all of the stories about random acts of kindness and Secret Santas… ways of connecting with people.

I found my opportunity to give on a recent trip… I dropped my rental car off at Hertz and I got on the little shuttle bus to go to LAX airport. The driver was a big guy who was very happy to let me on his bus, even though it was full, and he helped me with my bags. I really appreciated him because I needed help getting up those bus steps!

As he drove us all to the airport, I sat and watched him and I was picturing what his life was like. Even though he drove the same route, back and forth between Hertz and the airport all day, he really seemed to be enjoying it. (Kind of like Morgan Freeman as God mopping the floor in Bruce Almighty.) I realized then that I had an amazing opportunity to give. I got so excited. I sat there imagining giving him a great tip and thinking about how I could make his day just by showing my appreciation for his help.

Well, he must have felt something because when we got to my stop, he grabbed both of my bags from the piles and he carried them off the bus and all the way to the terminal door! The amazingly beautiful thing was that this was before I’d had the chance to give him the money! I then handed it to him and he thanked me with such a big smile and walked back to his bus.

As I was sorting out my bags, I watched him walk all the way back to the steering wheel. Then something made him stop and turn around. He got off the bus and walked back to me. He said, “I just wanted to let you know that you’re a beautiful person.” My heart almost burst in my chest because I knew that he’d felt the same thing I had – he was inspired to give and he just couldn’t help himself.

He got back on his bus, sat down behind the wheel, and turned and gave me the biggest smile and wave. And of course, I was waving like a mad thing back to him. It was so easy and I am transformed.
